Kid's Japanese visa expired, Over stay - How to apply for a new visa?

I have 2 experience in Japan with regards to over stay. This happened to my son's visa. Usually I set a reminder in Google calendar for reminding regarding all the renewals like Visa, passport etc. Some how I forgot to set reminder and both the incidents occurred :)

Incident ONE

First incident happened while I was at Tokyo, Narita Airport on the way to India for vacation. At the immigration section, the officer checked my son's passport and reported that my son does not have a valid visa and he is over staying for more than 1 month. OMG. The officer brought myself and my son alone to a room and locked the door and started asking questions. He asked my wife and elder son to stay out side the room.

He said this is criminal offence and they will not allow my son to travel to India.

"Keep in mind my flight will depart in 15 minutes."

I made all my try requesting the officer to somehow allow me to leave to India. I made the excuse that my son is only 3 years old and I apologized multiple times. I used all my Japanese skill here :)) with the words  Sumimasen, Arigatho, Hi, Daijob etc . He became very angry!!   I only know my tension. I requested him again telling the flight will leave in 10 minutes.

The officer called the flight manager and asked to delay the flight for few minutes.

Finally the officer issued a one way visa from Japan to India with a deported stamp and asked me to apply for new visa from India if my son is planning to come back :)

I applied for new visa from India and we were able to travel back safely!!

Incident TWO

This occurred yesterday 2013 Feb 18th.
My wife went to ward office for getting a resident certificate for all the family members.
At the ward office, while preparing the certificate, the officer said my son's visa has expired and my son is over staying and it is illegal. He called me immediately and asked me to visit immigration office and check the possibility of getting this sorted out.

I have checked with the visa attorney my office use for visa processing. I said I will prepare an apology letter and submit to the immigration office along with all supporting documents. As per the attorney , this is a rare case and he would charge 50,000 JPY as his service fees. He also mentioned this will need support in Japanese to convince the immigration department the reason for over stay.

Finally I decided to make a try myself. 50,000 JPY looked bit expensive for this matter :)) right??

I went to the Tokyo immigration bureau at Shinagawa early morning. Went to the reception and explained my case. She said I have to go to 2nd Floor , counter 5 consultation department and explain them the problem and seek their advice.

With my son's previous over stay experience, I didn't had much hope and went to the consultation department. After 30 minutes of waiting, I explained the issue to the officer about the over stay and visa expiry. One thing to be noted is it was only 3 weeks after the visa expiry. As per the attorney, he said if the over stay is less than 2 months then we should be able to get a visa renewal!!

The Visa officer was very cool hearing my case. I think she is handling similar cases for many years and also it is for a kid.

She explained me the procedure very nicely.

Since the visa already expired and it is an over stay, she suggested a 2 step process

1. I have to apply for a temporary visitor visa for 90 days
2. I have to apply for dependent visa - 5 years

She said I can apply both the above at the same time. I gave the visa application for both. She guided me in completing the same. In addition I provided below documents

1. Employment certificate - received from my company
2. Tax certificate - Took print from our payroll system
3. My residence card copy
4. Income certificate - Took print from our payroll system
5. Paid 4000 JPY for each application. So total 8000 JPY

After collecting all these documents, the officer asked me to wait. After few minutes she came with a new resident card for my son and said all procedure completed. She asked me to go to ward office within few days for changing the home address in the resident card. Since it was over stay, they didn't print the address on the card.

So finally my son got a valid visa without much problems. Saved 50,000 JPY !!!

Telephony & VoIP - Unified communication - based on Microsoft Lync Technology

Lync 2010, is an enterprise real-time communications server, providing the infrastructure for enterprise instant messaging, presence, file transfer, peer-to-peer and multiparty Voice and Video calling, ad hoc and structured conferences (audio, video and web) and PSTN connectivity, Group Chat

  • Control costs Voice over IP (VoIP) enables communications among geographically dispersed company locations without long distance charges. Integrated audio, video, and Web conferencing helps reduce travel costs as well as the cost of third-party conferencing solutions.
  • Improve productivity  Instead of e-mailing documents back and forth for approval, workers can rely on real-time collaboration through enhanced conferencing with desktop, application, and virtual whiteboard sharing from within Microsoft Office or other applications. The unified Microsoft Lync 2010 client provides access to enterprise voice, enterprise messaging, and conferencing from one simplified interface.
  • Support the mobile workforce Mobile workers get access to rich Unified Communications tools from practically anywhere with an Internet connection, no VPN needed. An updated Lync Mobile client makes joining and managing conferences, searching the Global Address List, and viewing presence information easy. Rich presence in Lync Server 2010 has been updated with mobile location information, making on-the-go workers easier to find and contact. A single user experience across PC, phone, mobile phone, and browser gives workers more ways to stay in touch.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance Built-in security, encryption, archiving, and call detail records help meet regulatory requirements. By using your own servers and network, you maintain control over sensitive data that would otherwise be transmitted over public telephone networks and third-party conferencing platforms.
Major features of Lync
  • Traditional calling features - Provide all the features users need , including call by name, hold, forward, transfer, divert, park, retrieve, voice mail, and conferencing, and improve on traditional voice systems with presence, instant messaging, and SharePoint-based Skill Search
  • Anywhere access - Deliver high-quality voice and other features to users anywhere with an Internet connection - no VPN or third-party solutions required.
  • A connected experience on the right device, right now - Use a PC laptop for a complete Lync experience outside the office. Alternatively, any phone alongside most web browsers can deliver a rich multi-media conferencing and instant messaging experience
  • Help others connect with you by never missing a call - Use Microsoft Lync 2010 simultaneous ringing to have incoming calls automatically ring on your mobile, home, or other telephone number in addition to your desktop client.
  • Richer experience - Conferencing is no longer a compromise when you have video, one-click desktop sharing, easy meeting requests, and even the ability to start a conference on a mobile phone and continue on a PC
  • Easily schedule and join conferences - Set up online meetings right from Microsoft Outlook with an easy-to-use scheduling plug-in. Participants can join with one click from the PC as well as mobile and desktop phones.
  • Reduce costs - Integrate ad hoc collaboration and online meetings with your Unified Communications platform rather than relying on expensive third-party conferencing solutions

Mail system for medium sized companies

When a new company is being setup, the first thing to be setup is a mail system infrastructure. There are numerous options available in the market. Some companies will go for setting up their own mail system using mail servers like microsoft exchange etc. Some companies will use mail service available with the hosting provider. In the current era of cloud computing, there is another option now which is cloud based email system. Now a days the market is moving towards cloud ..every where we can hear cloud business, cloud hosting, Infrastrcuture as a service, Software as a service, Communication as a service and so on.

For one of my recent proposal, there was a requirement for setting up communication and messaging services. One of the pre-requisite was it should be on the cloud and should come cost effective.

We have researched many solutions in the market and proposed a solution based on the zoho system.

The first impression from customer was negative with this solution and asked us to propose some other solution. We continued our research and came across many cloud based systems like Google Apps, Zimbra mail, Microsoft exchange online.

Finally we proposed a solution based on Microsoft exchange online which is part of the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Standard Suite.

This is a very promising solution and cost effective. This costs around 4 USD per month per user. There are other solutions too available online like Sharepoint online, Live meeting, office communications online. All this together will cost around 10 USD per user per month.

What are the main difference between an in house solution and an online solution

In-House servers

In House solution will need server hardware, operating system, software license, user licenses, data backup, management and maintenance of hardware/software, IT infrastructure, software upgrades etc.

Microsoft Online Services (http://www.microsoft.com/online/)

You dont need servers or upfront investment for setting up infrastructure. In addition we dont need dedicated skilled IT engineers to maintain the system.

Microsoft Business Productivity Online Standard Suite is a set of messaging and collaboration tools, delivered as a subscription service, that gives your business rich capabilities without the need to deploy and maintain software and hardware on-premise. These online services are designed to help meet your needs for robust security, all-day every-day

Microsoft Business Productivity Office Suite (BPOS) includes:

  1. Exchange Online - 25GB Mailbox, email security, central administration
  2. Sharepoint online - For user collaboration, etc., 250MB user storage
  3. Office Live meeting - Video and audio web conference and presentation
  4. Office communications online - Messaging client

Q. Why are you considering leaving your present job?

A. Regardless of the reason, do not bad mouth your current employer. Negativism will always hurt you. Good answers include: “There is no room for growth at my current employer. I am looking for a company with long term growth opportunities”. “Due to a company restructuring, my entire department is relocating to Florida. I was give the option of moving, but do not wish to relocate”. “My current company is not doing well, and has been laying off employees. There is no job security there, and more layoffs are expected”.

Q. What are your goals for the future?

A. “My long term goals are to find a company where I can grow, continue to learn, take on increasing responsibilities, and be a positive contributor”.

Q. How do you handle stress and pressure?

A. “I find that I work better under pressure, and I enjoy working in an environment that is challenging.” “I am the type of person that diffuses stress. I am used to working in a demanding environment with deadlines, and enjoy the challenges.”

Q. What do you know about our company?

A. This question is used to see if you have prepared for the interview. Candidates that have researched the company are more appealing. Companies like prepared, organized candidates.

Q. We have met several candidates. Why are you the project manager we should hire?

A. Give definite examples of your skills and accomplishments. Be positive, and emphasize how your background matches the job description.

Q. What are your greatest strengths?

A. Be positive and honest. “My greatest strength is maximizing the efficiency of my staff. I have successfully managed numerous teams on difficult projects. I have an excellent ability to identify and maximize each of my staffs strengths.” Give examples.

Q. Tell me about your greatest weakness?

A. It is very important to give a strength that compensates for your weakness. Make your weakness into a positive. “I consider myself a 'big picture' person. I sometimes skip the small details. For this reason, I always have someone on my team that is very detail oriented.” Another good answer: “Sometimes, I get so excited and caught up in my work that I forget that my family life should be my number one priority.”

Useful Estimation Techniques for Software Projects

This article is orginally published at http://www.developer.com/mgmt/article.php/1463281 by Mr.Sanjay Murthi. Full credits to the original author.

The Importance of Good Estimation

Software projects are typically controlled by four major variables; time, requirements, resources (people, infrastructure/materials, and money), and risks. Unexpected changes in any of these variables will have an impact on a project. Hence, making good estimates of time and resources required for a project is crucial. Underestimating project needs can cause major problems because there may not be enough time, money, infrastructure/materials, or people to complete the project. Overestimating needs can be very expensive for the organization because a decision may be made to defer the project because it is too expensive or the project is approved but other projects are "starved" because there is less to go around.

Record Sound from Audio Tape (Casette) using Nero Wave Editor

Step 1: Connect your tape player to your sound card

If you have a tape player with a "line-out" jack, you should really use that, but you can use the headphone jack if line out is not there. Whatever you're using, connect it to the "line-in" plug on the back of your sound card.

Play a little bit of the tape to make sure it's coming out of the PC speakers -- if it is, you've hooked everything up right. NOTE: if you don't hear anything, there's a possibility that your "line-in" volume is just muted. Open up the Windows volume control (Start - Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Volume Control), go to Options - Properties, make sure that "line-in" is one of the volume controls that is checked, and make sure that the line-in isn't muted.

On your tape player, make sure that any of the balance or bass/treble dials are set in the middle, so you'll get a true recording of the music. Also make sure any "bass boost" settings are off, so your final recording isn't muddy.

Step 2: Record a song

Open up the Nero Wave Editor and select the menu option Audio - Record. Use the default Sample Rate of 44100 Hz and 16-bit, and make sure that "Stereo Recording" is checked, and click OK. The Recording Console will initially start at a paused state. While the console is still paused, play a little of the tape, and make sure that the Input Level indicator goes up and down with the music that's playing. If not, you may have to change your audio input settings. You can do this by clicking Cancel, opening the Windows Sound Recorder (Start - Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Sound Recorder), choosing the menu option Edit - Audio Properties, clicking the Recording Properties button (with the little microphone on it), and making sure that "line-in" is selected in the recording control (if it doesn't appear as an option, go to Options - Properties and select it as an available volume control).

Input level: Ideally, you want the whole song to stay in the -20 to -10 range on the Input Level indicator.

After you have the volume set properly, rewind to just before the beginning of the song, start playing the tape, and click the "Record" button on the Wave Editor Recording Console (the button with the little red circle). After the song is over, click the "Pause" button on the Wave Editor again (just to the right of the Record button, designated with 2 vertical lines) and click the "OK" button to insert the music you just recorded to a new Wave Editor file.

Choose the menu option File - Save As to save your recorded selection as a WAV file.

Step 3: Clean up the track

Now that you've created a WAV file, you'll want to clean it up a little. Here's how:

1. Select the entire track (menu option Edit - Select All) and "Normalize" it to 0-Db by choosing the menu option Volume - Normalize.

2. Select the entire track again (Edit - Select All) and choose the menu option Enhancement - Noise Reduction. Click OK. This should remove a good amount of the tape hiss that came over with the track (you never really want to set the Reduction Level in the previous step to 100%, because that can create a lot of strange audio artifacts in the track -- 70% is usually good enough).

3. Choose the menu option File - Save to save the file again.
